Frederick W. Montague
Retired Architect
LITCHFIELD, NH: Frederick W. Montague, age 89, a resident of Litchfield, NH, formerly of Tewksbury, MA, passed away at the Hillsborough County Nursing Home on Wednesday, August 31, 2016.
He was the beloved husband of Esther M. (Beard) Montague, with whom he would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on November 20, 2016.
Born in Boston on September 24, 1926, he was the son of the late Cecil W. Montague and the late Helen (Guppy) Montague.
Fred was raised in East Boston, and graduated from Mechanic Arts High School. He later attended Boston Architectural Center and the Museum of Fine Arts School.
In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and served during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Vicksburg. He was awarded several decorations for his active duty service including the American Area Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 stars, and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was employed as an architect by the firm of Shepley, Bullfinch, Richardson & Abbott Architects. During his most rewarding career as an architect two of the projects he was most proud of was the contribution of his talent to the Massachusetts State House and the Smithsonian in Washington, DC.
Fred resided in Tewksbury for 48 years until moving to Litchfield, NH in 2009.
While in Tewksbury, he was an active member of the Tewksbury United Methodist Church, where he served as trustee, and as a member of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, and the Hospitality Committee.
In addition, Fred was a former member of the Tewksbury Housing Authority, the U.S. Navy Cruiser-Sailors Association, and volunteered his time to numerous youth organizations as well as to the Tewksbury Food Pantry.
Fred enjoyed astronomy, woodworking, and crafting musical instruments and grandfather clocks.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Curtis W. Montague of Lowell, and Susan E. Montague Comas of York, ME; two granddaughters, Leah B. and Faith N. Comas; two brothers, George B. Montague of Litchfield, NH, and Robert Preshong of Oregon; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Fred was the father of the late Judith A. Montague-Levesque, and brother of the late Raymond and Francis Montague.
Calling hours are Wednesday, Sept. 7, from 5- 8 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Fred’s memory may be made to the Tewksbury United Methodist Church, 2335 Main St., Tewksbury, MA 01876.
