Family and friends celebrate the life of Margaret R. (Gemme) Burbank of Forest Ave., Mystic who died Thursday in Mystic at the age of 82.
Margaret was the wife of Albert B. Burbank Sr. whom she married in 1941. They were to celebrate 64 years of marriage on August 1st.
Prior to her retirement, she enjoyed a long career as Director of Placement for the State of CT, Dept. of Mental Retardation based at Seaside Regional Center. After her retirement, she worked as a L.P.N on an outreach basis for Seaside at various schools throughout the area.
Active in civic and community affairs, Margaret served as Justice of the Peace and served as chairperson of the Groton Housing Authority. A member of the Democratic Town Committee, she also served on the Groton Town Council and was a respected elderly advocate who was instrumental in the development of Grasso Gardens. She was also a member of the Old Mystic Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, Margaret’s family includes a son, Al Burbank Jr. and his wife Antoinette of Cromwell; three grandchildren, Lance, Melissa, and Jacob Burbank, 4 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Thomas Gemme of NC, and Patricia Saunders of Fla.
Margaret’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 6-8pm. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday at 10am. Burial is private. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 238 W. Town Street, Norwich 06360.
