Obituary

Edward Meehan (Ret BFD), age 84, of Brockton, died August 25, 2016, after a lengthy illness. He was the devoted husband for 53 years of Nancy T. (Gabriel) Meehan. A lifelong resident of Brockton, Ed was the son of the late Thomas M. Meehan and Mary G. (Slattery) Meehan. In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his daughter, Mary Beth Meehan, and her husband, Chad J. Galts, of Providence, RI; his beloved grandsons, Graham and Edward Meehan Galts, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late John F., James J., and William T. Meehan.

Ed attended Brockton High School and Massasoit Community College. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, and sailed in the Merchant Marines for the Esso Oil Company. He worked as a guard in the Department of Corrections in Bridgewater and Walpole, and was most proud, in 1965, of becoming a Brockton Firefighter.

Throughout his life, Ed had many talents and interests. He was an avid gardener, beekeeper, hunter, and fisherman. He built and flew model airplanes, was a Hamm radio operator, and held his pilot’s license. He hand-caned chairs, and later in life became an accomplished woodcarver and weaver of Nantucket baskets. A gregarious presence in Brockton, he remained active with the Brockton Firefighters Relief Association, VFW Post 697, the Brockton High School Band Boosters, and the St. Colman community.

Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte. 123) Brockton, Monday 4-8 pm. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Tuesday at 8am, for a funeral Mass in Christ the King Parish at 9am. Burial at St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery, Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s name may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, Christ the King Church, 54 Lyman St., Brockton, 02302; Or to the Brockton Fire Museum, 216 North Pearl St., Brockton, 02301.
