GLEN JAMES HATFIELD, JR. of Hingham, MA and Key Largo, FL, died on Monday, July 25th at the Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham. He was 79.
Mr. Hatfield was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. An economics major, he graduated from Michigan State College in 1948. A speedy, hard-nosed competitor, he quarterbacked the football team's single wing offense to many victories.
An U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War Era, he served as a Sergeant with the 4th Infantry Division in Germany, collecting intelligence on Soviet forces in Central Europe.
Returning to Flint, Mr. Hatfield grew a single Hatfield's Jewelry store into a diversified public company, Cohen-Hatfield Industsries (CHI), one of the largest firms of its kind. Upon CHI's acquisition by McAndrews and Forbes, Inc., Mr. Hatfield served for many years as the president of the combined operating comany until he retired in 1984.
Restless in retirement, he became president of the Ocean Reef Club and Card Sound Golf Club in Key Largo, Florida, while maintaining an active role in his church.
Mr. Hatfield's great loves included his wife and family, his dogs, and his faith in God. He enjoyed playing golf with close friends and family, freely dispensing advice. He was an avid boater, covering thousands of miles cruising the Great Lakes and the Eastern Seaboard. Always on the go and always adventurous, he also enjoyed skiing, flying, high-performance driving and travel.
He will be missed by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ellen (Ward) Hatfield, his three sons, Stephen of Hingham, MA, William of Barrington, RI and David of Boulder, CO, and two daughters, Ellen Towne of Golden, CO and Mary Hatfield of Evergreen, CO, a sister Azora Davis of Chelsea, Michigan and 9 grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, July 30th at 11 AM at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043. The interment is private.
