EUNICE (TAVARES) RUNGE, 77, of Hingham and Isle Au Haut, Maine, died on Sunday, July 24th at the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in Blue Hill, Maine. She had suffered a massive stroke on July 17th while on Isle Au Haut.
Mrs. Runge was born in New Bedford, the youngest daughter of the late Domingos Tavares and the late Eugenia (Lima) Tavares. She was the valedictorian of her class at New Bedford High School. She received her B.A. from Northeastern University, where she met her late husband, Albert L. Runge, who died in July of 2004.
A retired school teacher, Mrs. Runge taught first and second grade for the Hingham Public Schools at Foster School in Hingham for 23 years. She continued to be involved with teaching as an occasional substitute teacher at South Elementary School. She had a deep love of teaching and was fondly regarded in Hingham by her ex-pupils.
A 54 year resident of Hingham, Mrs Runge served on the Board of the Garden Club of Hingham. She was also a very active member of the Hingham Congregational Church, where she served as its first female Moderator and as its Deacon, as well as the President of the Monday Guild and as the Superintendent of the Sunday School. An avid sailor with her late husband, she was a member of the Hingham Yacht Club for 40 years. But she will be remembered most by her family as a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her three sons; Jeffrey A. Runge of Newmarket, NH, Gregory D. Runge of Isle Au Haut, Maine and Jonathan S. Runge of Palo Alto, CA, as well as two sisters; Eugenia Florio of New Bedford and Deolinda Fonseca of North Dartmouth, a brother, David Tavares of South Dartmouth and 6 grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be conducted on Sunday evening, July 31st at 7 PM at the Hingham Congregational Church, 378 Main St. (Rt. 228), Hingham. The interment will be on Monday, Aug. 1st at 11:30 AM at the Mass. National Cemetery in Bourne.
