Janusz Sciegienny a former M.I.T. scientist and engineer died on Wednesday July 20th, after a long battle with cancer. He was 81 years old. He was born in Warsaw, Poland where he studied at the underground Warsaw Lyceum during the Nazi occupation. Mr. Sciegienny received honors in 1994 and 2004 from the Polish Government fro his role as a Freedom Fighter in World War II and the Warsaw Uprising. After liberation from a German P.O.W. camp in 1945, he studied at the Hannover Techni Schule where he received his first engineering degree in 1949. He immigrated to the United States in 1950 as a displaced person. Mr. Sciegienny attended M.I.T. where he earned graduate degrees in 1952 and 1955. His 42 year career at M.I.T. included years of working on the Apollo projects and satellite programming and tracking. His retirement years were spent inventing, gardening at his home, hiking in the mountains, shooting at his club and using his telescopes for night sky viewing and daytime solar flares. His mind was always active. The beloved husband of Lorraine (Mason), he was the father of Renee of Boston and Robert of Eagle Point, Oregon. Grandfather of Justina of Boston and brother of Hannah Zysk of Warsaw, Poland and uncle of many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours at the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre St. NEWTON CORNER
