Obituary

Lillian Louise (Bennett) Martel, 96, formerly of Mystic died Monday, August 1, 2016 at Gladeview Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Old Saybrook. Her beloved husband of 58 years, Joseph Roland Martel, predeceased her in 2000.

She was born on November 9, 1919, in New Bedford, MA, the daughter of Robert A. and Lily (Whittaker) Bennett. She graduated from New Bedford High School and Norwich Regional Tech with a degree in Nursing. She worked at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1985.

Lillian was a devoted Episcopalian and was a member of St. Mark's Church, serving on the Altar Guild and in the Bell Choir. She was a member and past matron of the Charity Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She was active in scouting as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout den mother for many years.

She is survived by her five children: Susan L. Williams of Groton, Elaine M. Ruffino of Clinton, Robert R. Martel and his wife Cheryl of Voluntown, Deborah J. Blish of Spencerport, NY, and John D. Martel and his wife Mia of Clinton, as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Her family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, August 4, from 5 to 7pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Friday, August 5 at 11:00am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic. Burial will be private for the family.
