Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Joseph William Morgan, 65, devoted son, loyal brother and beloved uncle, passed away peacefully at a local nursing home on Monday, July 25, 2016. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Robert E. and Joan A. (Foley) Morgan; and is survived by his cherished brothers John (Janet) of Midlothian, Virginia, Robert of Bourne and James (David) of South Hadley. He leaves behind several first cousins and a loving niece and nephew, Sarah Morgan of Arlington, Virginia and Chris Morgan of Atlanta, Georgia. Joe was a lifelong Springfield resident and a 1969 graduate of the High School of Commerce. He was a long-time communicant of Our Lady of Hope parish and more recently of St. Catherine of Siena parish. For many years, he was a dedicated worker at Goodwill Industries of Springfield, where he took pride in his work, collected multiple Employee of the Month citations, and was known for frequently offering his novel ideas for improving the workplace! Joe met the many challenges of his 65 years with great dignity and character. He always showed determination, humility and good humor. Joe was a hard worker, never a whiner, and unfailingly respectful and decent to others. His example will inspire us for the rest of our lives. His brothers cherish happy memories of growing up on Hungry Hill and the misadventures we shared, now family legends. These include Joe and John tricking kindergartener Bob into going to school on a Saturday; the epic Green Cupcake tantrum; and heaving littlest brother Jim off a sand dune at the Cape. We remember his deadly hook shot on the backyard court, the thriving tomato patch he cultivated each summer, vacation weeks in South Wellfleet, and the family treks to every state park within a half-day radius of Huron Street, begging Mom and Dad to stop at Carvel on the way home. Those were the days. Joe loved his church and was a steadfast believer. His strong faith, and the character strengths that flowed from it, have assured his place alongside his Creator – no one could be more deserving. It would not be surprising, though, if upon arrival he offered a few well-meaning suggestions for improving the place. His family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers at the Chapin Center Nursing Home in Springfield who so lovingly cared for him over the past five years. His relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Saturday morning, July 30, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107 which will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His burial will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery, 292 Hampden Street, Chicopee, MA 01013. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Chapin Center Resident Activity Fund, 200 Kendall Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
