Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Harry J. Metzidakis, 89, of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center after being stricken at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on October 21, 1926, a beloved son of the late John and Katherine (Gouliemakis) Metzidakis. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from the former Springfield Technical High School and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Prior to his military service, Harry was employed as a machinist apprentice at the former Springfield Armory. Harry served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Seaman First Class. He served aboard the USS Boxer CV-21 and received the American Area Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Springfield and was employed as a Lithographer at the former General Offset Printing Company in Springfield. Following the closing of the company, he was employed at Calfran in West Springfield. During his younger years, he enjoyed fishing and enjoyed attending hockey games. He was a member of the Minos Crete Club in Springfield and a faithful communicant of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield. Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law and friend who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Vasileke “Bessie” (Manioudakis) Metzidakis. They were married on October 24, 1948 at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral and were blessed with over 67 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving children, Angelo H. Metzidakis of Sweet Briar, VA and Katina Metzidakis of Houston, TX; his cherished grandson, Matthew C. Skinner and his fiancée, Erica, of Houston, TX; his dear sister-in-law, Katherine Metzidakis of Agawam; his dear brother-in-law, George Manioudakis and his wife, Constance, of Chicopee; his dear sister-in-law, Calliope (Manioudakis) Hoffman of Longmeadow; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Metzidakis and Manioudakis families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his two dear brothers, Steve Metzidakis and Phillip Metzidakis. His funeral will be held on Saturday morning, June 4, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Funeral Service at 9:30 a.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107. His burial with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Service at Oak Grove Cemetery, 426 Bay Street, Springfield, MA 01109. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 22 Saint George Road, Springfield, MA 01104.
