George Lovett Durfee, USN-Ret, age 68, of Groton, died Tuesday afternoon at the VA Medical Center in West Haven after a brief illness.
Mr. Durfee was born in Pittsfield, MA on August 10, 1936 the son of Elmer and Beulah (Lovett) Durfee. Raised in Stockbridge, MA, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Williams High School. After completing his education, he entered the US Navy where he enjoyed a 30-year career, retiring as Engineman First Class on October 1, 1987. Following his retirement, he worked at the New London-Groton Airport, Electric Boat, and as a Security Guard and Plumber at the Mystic Seaport.
In his spare time, George was an active HAM Radio operator, operating under the calls NIRVW and JU1SSB. He was also active in the Mars and Scrams Radio Clubs.
He is survived by his first wife, Rose VanZant and their children, Thomas Durfee, George Durfee, Laura Good, and Martyn Durfee; his second wife, Lucinda Burdick and their children, Alisha Durfee, Constance Durfee, and Beriah Durfee; and 9 grandchildren.
George’s family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 6-8pm. His funeral service will be conducted at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 29 Main Street, Stockbridge MA on Tuesday at 1pm. Burial with military honors will follow in the family plot in Stockbridge Cemetery.
