Obituary

Patrose, Mariam, wife of the late Kurian Patrose, died Sunday, May 22 at her son’s home on Memorial Drive, Cambridge, where she had lived for many years.

Born in Kerala, India on September 21, 1925, as one of seven siblings Mrs. Patrose was educated at the Baker Memorial School in Kottayam, India and attended college at the Union Christian College in Alwaye, India, and received a bachelor of arts and a master’s degree in history from Annamalai University in Madras State in 1946.

She was a teacher at Springdales School, a leading private school in New Delhi, and was promoted to headmistress, a position she held for 16 years. All of her children attended the school while she was headmistress. While her sons were being educated in the United States Mrs. Patrose made many trips to visit them prior to their graduations. She and her husband lived in Iran in 1940s, various places in India, and in retirement settled in Cambridge, where she made many friends and was a regular member at The Society of Saint John the Evangelist on Memorial Drive. She was an expert cook of Syrian Christian cuisine and mastered knitting on her own. Until a few months ago, Mrs. Patrose was knitting blankets for hospitalized children in Brighton, Mass. She loved animals, and feeding sparrows was dear to her heart, as was sending food packages to the homeless in and around Harvard Square.

She is survived by her sister Saramma George of Kavyoor, Kerala State in India, her daughter Mariam and son-in-law Thomas Mathew of Bangalore, her son Babu and daughter-in-law Sheila Patrose of Walnut Creek, California, and son Prataap Patrose and his partner James Paradis of Boston. She also leaves several nephews and nieces along with four grand children: Maya and Reena Patrose of Walnut Creek,CA, Rahul Mathew and his wife Manjari Verma of Bombay, and Ranjan Mathew of New Delhi. Her husband of 68 years Kurian Patrose died in 2012.

A memorial service is planned for late August. Burial will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
