...Boston Globe Foreman; 80
TEWKSBURY - George J. Lucas, age 80, a resident of Tewksbury for over five decades, died
Friday, July 8, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington after a brief illness. He was the
husband of Eileen L. (McCarthy) Lucas, with whom he had celebrated a 57th wedding anniversary
this past June 19th.
He was born in Cambridge, September 12, 1924, a son of the late Andrew and Catherine
(Wladyko) Lucas. He was raised in Somerville and graduated Somerville High School. He later
attended Northeastern University.
He served stateside in the Army Air Force during WWII.
He was a pressman for the Boston Globe, and was promoted to Press Room Foreman prior to
retirement. He worked at both the Boston and Billerica production facilities.
He was a member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington Elks, and prior to promotion to management, a
member of the TNG-CWA, Local 31245, Boston Newspaper Guild. In his later years, he
enjoyed oil painting, and fishing, and was a frequent visitor to Tewksbury’s Senior Drop-In
Center.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Gayle and Paul Plouffe of
Pelham, NH, and Nancy Lucas of Tewksbury; a granddaughter, Sarah Plouffe of Jupiter,FL; and
several nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Carl Lucas and Peter Lucas.
Following cremation, a graveside memorial service will be held Thursday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. in
the Tewksbury Cemetery. At his request, visiting hours are omitted. In lieu of flowers,
memorials to the American Heart Assn., 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688 will be
appreciated.
