WORCESTER-Jennie Lou (Robinson) Rogers, 81, a long time Worcester resident, died Thursday July 7, at home after a courageous battle against bone cancer. Her husband of 54 years Raymond Rogers predeceased her in 1995. She leaves 2 sons, Frederick R. and Rocky P. Rogers both of Charlton; 2 daughters, Frances Robinson, with whom she lived in Stone Mountain, GA, and Martha J. Rogers of Cape Coral, FL; a foster son, David Martin of Coral Springs, FL; 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.
Mrs. Rogers was born in Andrews, NC the daughter of Oscar and Martha (Martin) Robinson. During WWII, she was a true “Rosie the Riveter” as she welded chain links together at St. Pierre Chain in West Boylston. These chains were used to hold anchors of U.S. Battleships. In the 1950’s she worked as a nurse in the tuberculosis wing of the Veteran’s Hospital in Rutland. In the 1970’s she became well known for making hand made quilts and supply could never meet demand. Instead of selling them, she would give them away as gifts, and the quilts are considered priceless by those who own them. She enjoyed gardening, playing cribbage, solving puzzles, greyhound racing and the Boston Red Sox.
The funeral is Thursday, July 14th, at 10:00 AM in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park. Calling hours are Wednesday, July 13th from 6:00 until 9:00 PM in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
