Robert E. Dexter, 88, a longtime resident of Stoughton, died Sunday, July 3, at his home in South Yarmouth after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Loretta K. (Kennedy) Dexter. Born in Stoughton to Mary (Dooley) Dexter and Dr. Edward Dexter, he was a graduate of Stoughton Schools. He was a WWII Veteran of the US Army, where he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served under Gen. MacArthur and was a member of the the 1st Occupation Troops in Japan. Mr. Dexter worked for the Town of Stoughton as the assessor for over 15 years. He was the Chairman of the Board of Assessors in the 1970’s. After suffering a stroke in 1976, he retired and moved to Yarmouth. Since then he has been participating in studies at the Aphasia Research Center of Boston University School of Medicine and the Aphasia Research Center of Brown University. He was a member of the American Legion Post 89 and the Sharon Country Club. In his free time, he enjoyed golfing.
In addition to his wife Loretta K. (Kennedy) Dexter, he is survive by his son, Robert E. Jr. of Stoughton. He was the brother of R. William Dexter of CA. He was predeceased by his parents Dr. Edward Dexter and Mary Ethel (Dooley) Dexter and his sister Dorothy Richards. He was the grandfather of Maj. Christopher E. Dexter, USArmy, Neil Dexter, and Kathleen Child.
Funeral will be held from the Farley Funeral Home, 358 Park St. (Rt. 27) Stoughton on Thursday at 8 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Immaculate Conception Church at 9 AM. Visiting Hours Wednesday 5-8 PM. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
