Rene J. Poisson, 85, of Cumberland died Tuesday at The Holiday in Manville. He was the loving husband of the late Lucy M. (St. Sauveur) Poisson who passed away in 2005.
Born in Central Falls he was a son of the late Joseph W. and Irene (Guilbeault) Poisson. He was a resident of Cumberland for over 55 years.
Mr. Poisson served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He worked in his earlier years as a skilled auto body mechanic at several shops the area including Gene’s in Manville. He was later employed at General Motors in Framingham for over 25 years before retiring in 1989.
Mr. Poisson was member of the Alphonse Yelle Post 9 American Legion in Manville. He was a longtime communicant of St. Joan of Arc Parish in Cumberland. An active parishioner he served as a Eucharistic minister and headed the children’s choir.
Rene was a loving and devoted family man.
He is survived by a son Gerard R. “Gerry” Poisson and his wife, Carmen, of Cumberland and two grandchildren Kevin and Amy Poisson both of Cumberland. He was the brother of Laurent "Larry” Poisson, Philippe Poisson, Rose Calvey and Annette Hebert and the late Eva Turenne. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.
His funeral will be Monday at 9:00 am from the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Joan of Arc Church, Mendon Rd. Cumberland. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham. Visiting hours are Sunday from 4-7 pm.
