Obituary

Raymond A. Palmer, Jr., born in Brookline, MA turned 85 years old on March 8. He died in the beginning of his 86th year after lengthy illnesses at Hallmark Nursing and Rehabilitation facility. He was the son and first born to Raymond A. Palmer and Doris V. (Wilson). Ray grew up in Medford, MA and later moved to Greenwich, CT. The family would like to thank all the staff at Hallmark for the loving care they provided. Ray has been a lifelong resident of Westport. As a child, he summered with his family and tells the story of his father carrying him to the family home and as an adult, lived full time in Westport. Ray loved the water, the ocean and golf.
He was an All Star Hockey player in the Boston area and was recruited by a number of schools, but chose to follow in his father’s footsteps in the FW Woolworth, Co. He was successful in the marketing and sales areas. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the 54th infantry division.
He is survived by his wife Nathalie and five children: Cheryl of NY, M. Kathleen Palmer of FL, Raymond, III of PA, Pamela Wayne of NY and Alan of MA; thirteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his twin brothers David and Paul Palmer and loving sister Susan Palmer Kelly and spouse James.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Frederick Morton and John Calvert Palmer and step-son Lawrence Foley.
Ray was a member of the Acoaxet Club for many years serving as VP, President and board member. He chaired many committees and was regarded in high esteem by all who knew him. He initiated the 3 day member guest tournament that is considered the hallmark of the Summer Season. He will be greatly missed as a compassionate and caring man. He was a former golfing member of the Country Club of New Bedford.
There will be a private burial for children and extended family at a time to be determined. A memorial service will be held at the Westport Point United Methodist Church in mid May.
