Frank Mahoney of Canton passed away on the 15th at home surrounded by his family at the age of 98. Mr. Mahoney was married to the love of his life Theresa Mahoney for 72 years until she passed away in August 2014.
Mr. Mahoney was born and raised in Dorchester, the son of Irish immigrants from County Cork, Ireland.
Mr. Mahoney studied Opera at The Boston Conservatory of Music and was an operatic tenor who performed at many venues, including singing the National Anthem at Fenway Park for the Red Sox. He hosted an AM radio program in Boston many years ago on which Lucille Ball was a guest. In 1998 he co-produced his CD, “Return to Ireland,” with his musician Son Stephen, singing some original material written by Stephen. He sang up until his death. His favorite all time tenor was Eugene Conley from Lynn.
After a 3 1/2 year tour of duty in Europe in WW2 as a Sergeant in the US Army, Mr. Mahoney became a successful life insurance agent, working for over 65 years. He was a life member of the Million Dollar Round Table. While working as an agent for Transamerica, he was featured in company ads in prominent publications such as Sports Illustrated and the Wall Street Journal.
From 1955 until 2004 Mr. Mahoney, also known as Pa, summered on Oldham Pond in Hanson. He loved the sun and the beach.
Pa lived a long and healthy life. He was devoted to his family and served his country with honor. He prided himself on a strong work ethic and is survived by, Diane and Thomas Farrell of Florida. Andrea and Gregory Kehoe of Braintree, Stephen Mahoney of California, Alanna and Nils Edstrom of Stoughton, Brian Mahoney and Elaine Babcock of Stoughton, Christopher and Juli Mahoney of Mansfield as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Sunday 4-8 pm. Funeral mass at St. Gerard Majella Church Canton Monday morning at 10:00. Burial Canton Corner Cemetery.
