Obituary

Bernard "Jim" J. McManus, 83, of Worcester, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 2nd, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 46 years, Margaret R. (Robinson) McManus and his brother, John "Jack" McManus. He leaves two loving daughters, Peggy Bolte and her husband, Paul, of Sunderland, and their children, Jennifer, Bryan, and Kelley, and Katherine Oftring and her husband, Bob, of Worcester, and their children, Rob, Colin, and Michael, along with many nieces and nephews. Jim also leaves his wife Elizabeth A. (O'Connell) Phelan McManus; and his brother Arthur McManus and his wife Doris, of Burlington, MA.

Jim was born in Worcester, the son of Bernard J. McManus and Katherine (Flynn) McManus. He was a graduate of Commerce High School where he played baseball, and The College of the Holy Cross where he captained the hockey team in 1955. Following graduation, Jim was employed in sales and marketing for American Greetings and Smith Corona until his retirement. He was actively involved in the Elks Club of Worcester where he was Exalted Ruler from 1970-1971. He also facilitated the Elks Hoop Shoot Contest for many years. Jim served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Charles Borromeo and Christ the King Parishes. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. His love of outdoor activities led him to meet his wife, Peggy, while skating at Elm Park in 1954. His dedication to Holy Cross found him there regularly skating at the Hart Center, and avidly following the athletic teams. His fondness for sports and outdoor activities including golf, skiing, bicycling, and kayaking, was passed to his children and grandchildren through his teaching and instruction.

His funeral will be held Friday, February 5th from O'CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL 11:00 a.m in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, February 4th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. The family would like to thank the staff at the Jewish Healthcare Center for their loving support and compassionate care for Jim. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Jim McManus to the JHC Alzheimer's Unit, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
