New Bedford – Augustus E. Chase, Jr., 98, died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at home peacefully in his sleep after a long illness. He was the widower of Clara L. (Suter) Chase.
He was born in New Bedford, son of the late Augustus E. and Caroline (Dow) Chase, and was a lifelong resident of New Bedford. He was employed in the office of the former Continental Screw Company for 9 years and was a New Bedford letter carrier for more than 34 years. He loved his church, the Acushnet-Wesley United Methodist Church, where he was treasurer for 22 years and served on different committees. Mr. Chase was a lifetime member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, also a member of Retired Federal Employees and American Association of Retired Persons. In his younger days he was an avid saltwater fisherman. In his latter years he collected old books and old bottles.
He is survived by a son: David Chase of Monument Beach, MA; 2 daughters: Barbara L. Desjeunes of New Bedford and Dorothy C. Bynum of Southgate, MI; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Joyce E. Chase and brother of the late Leonard R. Chase, Caroline McDonald and Florence Pisarczyk.

Services on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at the Kirby Funeral Home at 10:00 A.M.
Interment in Acushnet Cemetery, Acushnet.
