William J. "Billy" Cotter Jr., a 20 year resident of North Falmouth and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life suddenly on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Falmouth Hospital. He was 56 years of age.
Billy was born in Boston on April 22, 1959, a son of William J. Cotter and Marjorie (Cutlip) Cotter. He grew up in Charlestown where to many of his friends he was known as "Fish" Cotter. He began his hockey career at a very early age, playing for the Charlestown youth hockey program and the Milt Schmitt youth hockey program where he held several state scoring titles in the pee wee and bantam divisions. He was educated at St. Francis De Sales Parochial School, and graduated from Matignon High School in 1977 where he was a member and senior captain of the Massachusetts High School State Hockey Championship Team of 1977 . Following high school, Billy furthered his hockey career and education at Boston University, winning the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship his freshman year in 1978. Billy graduated from Boston University in 1981 where he was also a senior captain for the Boston University Hockey Team. Following college, Billy worked as a Substance Abuse Counselor for many years at High Point Treatment Center and later at Gosnold Inc. where he helped many people personally and professionally with substance abuse throughout his career. Billy is the loving husband of 8 years to Jennifer L. Fay. He is the beloved son of William J. "Bill" Cotter and the late Marjorie (Cutlip) Cotter. He is the devoted brother of Jeannie Cotter, James Cotter, and the late Patrick Cotter. He is the loving uncle to Taylor Cotter. He is the beloved son-in-law of Joseph and Ruth Fay. Billy is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Billy's Funeral on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 9 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 A.M. His burial will be private. His visiting hours will be on Monday, January 25, 2016 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.
