Obituary

CHICOPEE – Raymond G. Mainville, 90, a resident of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Friday, January 22, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke surrounded by his comrades and his wonderful caregivers. He was born at home on Ludlow Road in the Fairview section of Chicopee on December 2, 1925, a beloved son of the late Amedée and Ida (Veillette) Mainville. He was raised in Chicopee and graduated from the former Holyoke Trade High School. He lived in Chicopee for many years and later lived in South Hadley before moving to Aldenville in 1989. Ray served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps with the Second Emergency Rescue Battalion and attained the rank of Corporal. He received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to the area and was employed as a tool and die maker for Johnson Controls in Springfield. He was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus in Chicopee and served for many years as a Member of the Home Association Board of Directors. He was also a Fourth Degree member of the Bishop Joseph F. Maguire Assembly 2670 where he served in their Honor Guard. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Marie L. B. (Letendre) Mainville who was Called Home on March 13, 2012. They were married on May 8, 1948 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Chicopee and were blessed with over 63 years of happiness together. He leaves his two loving sons, Michael P. Mainville of Chicopee and John Abreu of West Springfield; his four cherished grandchildren, Brieann M. Underwood, Kara R. Mainville, Sage Marie Abreu and Aiden Abreu; his five cherished great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jayce, Brooklyn, Naraya and Timothy; his dear sister-in-law, Rena Mainville; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Mainville and Letendre families. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving son, Paul Mainville who was Called Home in 1960; his dear brother, Albert Mainville; and his three dear sisters, Blanche Mastaj, Lillian Fortin and Rita Larder. His funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, January 27, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with United States Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke Activity Fund, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
