Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Marian A. (Haffke) McMahon, 95, a longtime resident of Saint James Avenue and Cloran Street in Springfield and Providence Place in Holyoke, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, January 20, 2016. She passed into Eternal Life at Birch Manor Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Chicopee surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born at home in Chicopee on January 24, 1920, a beloved daughter of the late Frederick and Edna (Churchill) Haffke. She was raised in Chicopee and graduated from Chicopee High School. She furthered her education and received her Bachelor’s Degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1939 and taught at several Catholic Schools in the area and retired as Principal of Holyoke Catholic High School in 1982. She was the widow of Anthony T. Washington who was Called Home on November 26, 1984 and Thomas A. McMahon who was Called Home on September 2, 2001. She was also predeceased by her sister, Lillian Ouellette who was Called Home in 1995. She leaves several loving children of Thomas McMahon and many loving nephews and nieces. Her relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday morning, January 25, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 405 Boston Road, Springfield, MA 01109. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
