Obituary

HOLYOKE – Edward J. Cote, 83, a longtime resident of Holyoke, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, January 19, 2016. He passed into Eternal Life at Wingate at West Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on September 3, 1932, a beloved son of the late Joseph E. and Dorilla (Deneault) Cote. He was raised in the North End section of Springfield and moved to Holyoke in 1964 where he lived for the remainder of his life. He served his country during the Korean Conflict in the United States Air Force and attained the rank of Airman First Class. He received the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he returned to the area and was employed as a printer at the former City Stamp Works in West Springfield and later at the former Dennison National in Holyoke. He was last employed as a printer and typesetter at the former Southworth Paper Company in Agawam. Following his retirement, Ed was employed for 15 years as a service clerk for the Big Y Foods. During his leisure time, Ed and his wife, Claudette, enjoyed dancing and were members of the Dancing Shadows Square Dance Club and the Left Footers Round Dance Club. Most of all, he was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother who showered his family with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Claudette J. (Falardeau) Cote. They were married on October 25, 1958 at the former Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Willimansett and were blessed with over 57 years of happiness together. He also leaves his three loving daughters, Marie I. Bergeron and her husband, Norman “Sonny”, of Granby, Theresa J. Mitera and her husband, Michael, of Holyoke and Lisa A. Catrett and her husband, Alan, of Easthampton; his seven cherished grandchildren, Marissa Brueshaber and her husband, Brian, James Bergeron, Katherine Bergeron, Joshua Mitera, Christine Cocolla and her husband, Daniel, Jessica Mirisis and her husband, Petros, and Chelsea Catrett and her fiancé, Matthew Staples; and his six cherished great-grandchildren, Fredrick, Amber, Valerie and Aimie Brueshaber and Katerina and Alexandra Mirisis. He will also be watching from the Eternal City of Heaven the birth of his seventh great-grandchild, Eleni Mirisis. In addition, he leaves his dear brother-in-law, Claude Falardeau of Mystic, CT; his two dear sisters-in-law, Irene Giguere and Laurette Sutherland and her husband, Milton, all of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Cote and Falardeau families. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his two dear sisters, Lorraine Beach and Odelia “Cookie” Vaughan; and his nephew, Ronald Vaughan. His funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, January 26, 2016 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 7:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with United States Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, January 25, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
