Obituary

Diane L. (Lavoie) Murphy, 77, of Westport, passed away at home with her family by her side on Sunday, January 17, 2016 following a long illness. She was the wife of Daniel J. Murphy.
Born in Fall River to Roland and Doris (St. Germain) Lavoie, her father was a GI killed in action in France in 1944 when she was six years old. She was a 1956 graduate of Mount St. Mary's High School and a 1959 graduate of St. Anne's Hospital School of Nursing. As a registered nurse, Mrs. Murphy began her career working in the operating room at St. Anne's Hospital. Subsequently, she worked at the National Institutes of Health and later at the Same Day Surgi-Clinic on Stanley Street in Fall River. Diane and her husband Daniel raised their children and lived for many years in South Dartmouth.
Diane was a past communicant at St. Mary's Church in Dartmouth and, recently, attended St. John the Baptist Church in Westport. She volunteered for many years at Sister Rose’s Homeless Shelter in New Bedford, preparing and serving meals to the under privileged.
She most enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Also, her culinary skills were greatly appreciated by all invited to her dinner table.
Survivors along with her husband include her two sons Michael T. Murphy of Nashua, NH, Dr. Timothy P. Murphy of Providence, RI, her daughter Lisa-Anne DeMello and her husband James of Rochester, MA. She is also survived by a brother Paul Lavoie of California, her twin Doris Hannon of Westport and her sister Jackie Maltais of Tiverton, eight grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother the late Donald Lavoie.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, January 23, 2016 at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
