Augusta, GA---Mr. Chris Mercer, Jr, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am tomorrow Saturday, January 16, 2016 at the Stevens Creek Community Church with Pastor Chris Miller and Pastor Dave Willis officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park with Pastor Rich Bowen officiating.
Mr. Mercer was a native of Kinston, NC, but had been a resident of the Augusta area for more than 40 years. He owned and operated McDuffie Box Company, Inc., in Thomson, GA for 28 years. Chris was a man of few words, however when he spoke it was worth listening to. He built his business on biblical principles of honesty and integrity and believed in living out faith daily. He made a lasting impact, through churches in our community, including New Hope Worship Center, Stevens Creek Community Church and Genesis Church.
Chris is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gail Bryan Mercer of Augusta, GA, son, Randy Houston Mercer, daughter, Miriam Mercer Smith, both of Cartersville, VA, brothers, Cecil Mercer (Joan) of Kinston, NC and Ted Mercer (Deana) of Trenton, NC, sister, Theresa M. Harrison of Spruce Pine, NC, three grandchildren, Daniel Smith (Amy) of Boston, MA, Matthew Smith (Courtney) and Nathan Smith, all of Cartersville, VA, brothers in law, Julian Bryan III (Xenia) of Boca Raton, FL, Howard Bryan of Winston Salem, NC and numerous other relatives.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Rodgers, Jerry Harrison, Larry Metcalf, Michael Barker, Dan Smith, Mike Ward, William Parker and Winston Hogan. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of McDuffie Box Company, Inc.
The family will receive friends this evening Friday, January 15, 2016 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Road.
