Leonard C. McGrath, of Woburn passed away peacefully January 1, 2016 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading following a lengthy illness. He was 88. Leonard was the beloved husband of Letitia F. (Wait) McGrath together sharing 55 years of marriage. Born in Cambridge he was the son of William and Mary (Dinsmore) McGrath.
Leonard was raised and educated in Cambridge. He was a proud U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. Leonard was a graduate of Boston University and also received his Masters Degree from Boston University. He was a dedicated educator and worked for nearly forty years in the City of Cambridge School System where he worked and taught in the special education department and was an advocate for children with special learning needs as well as being the driving force and the person responsible for integrated these children into the main stream classrooms. This was something he and his family were very proud of. Leonard was a man strong in his Catholic Faith and for many years was a very active and involved parishioner of St. Barbara Church. He taught 8th grade CCD and served as a lector and usher at the church.
Leonard enjoyed the outdoors, spending time on the beach at their summer home in Duxbury. Wintering in Florida where he enjoyed time with his wife and their friends. He liked to golf and especially enjoyed gardening and planting flowering trees and shrubs at his home. He was part of a wonderful neighborhood and shared many good times over the years with his neighbors who became an extended part of his family. However his greatest joy was his family and especially his grandchildren whom he was so proud of. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
In addition to his beloved wife Letitia, He is survived by his children; Leonard McGrath Jr. and his wife Lisa of Gloucester, William McGrath and his wife Laura of Woburn, Albert McGrath and his wife Linda of Londonderry, NH, Letitia Wierzbicki and her fiancé Scott Howard of Woburn. He was the loving grandfather of Ryan, Brenna and Sean McGrath, Mitchell, Brandon, Connor and Cassidy McGrath, Samantha, Joseph and Hannah McGrath, Katherine, Michael and Christina Wierzbicki. Brother of the late Lola Campbell, William McGrath and Irene Werkowski. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., WOBURN, Wednesday, January 6th, at 10 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday from 3 thru 7 p.m. Services will conclude with burial at Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
