Obituary

SPENCER: Mary Greenleaf (Toomey) Baker 87, of Cooney Rd., died Monday, Dec. 21 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.

She leaves her husband of 67 years, Frank J. Baker, her daughters Mary D. Baker- Wood and her husband Ralph of Spencer, Nancy E. Billings and her husband William, Kathryn F. Partridge and her husband Lester, her sons Blaise B. Baker, Garrett Baker and his wife Brenda all of No.Brookfield, and Peter Baker and his partner Melissa Meleen of Barre; her grandchildren Catherine Wood, Adam Wood, Jamie Billings, Jeremy Partridge, Amanda Hunt, Joseph Baker and Dylan Baker; great grandchildren Madalena Algarin and Nora Partridge; nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by brothers Charles, James and Richard Toomey and a sister Kathryn Bartimo.

Mary was born in Spencer, the daughter of James A. and Mary C. (Derby) Toomey and later graduated from David Prouty High School and Brom's Hairdressing Academy in Worcester.

Mary was involved in various town affairs including as Registrar of Voters, Election Worker, member of the Spencer Historical Commission, and Chairwoman, Spencer Historical Society for many years.

She was the Editor of the "History of Spencer, 1875-1975" and co-author, "Images of Spencer, Massachusetts".

She was a Past President, Women's Guild and Past Council Member of Mary, Queen of the Rosary Parish.

Mary once worked at Elm Hill Farms, in Brookfield, and Dolan's Drug Store, Newell's News and Klem's, all in Spencer.

She loved spending time with her family; Grandview, the Derby family farm; and trips to Maine, especially Nubble Light and the Maine Diner.

Mary, was a true and proud RED SOX FAN. After their 2004 World Series win, she received many calls of congratulations as though she was a member of the team.

At her request, private services are planned with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Spencer. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Spencer Historical Society, 8 Pleasant St., Spencer, Ma. 01562.
