Alan B. Mercer, Sr., 89, of Dartmouth, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Falmouth Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Phyllis D. Mercer, whom he was married to for 67 years.
Mr. Mercer was born in Dartmouth, son of the late Richard and Margaret (Margeson) Mercer and had been a lifelong resident of the town. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was an engineering supervisor for Commonwealth Electric in the planning department. A veteran of WWII, he served his country in the United States Navy. Mr. Mercer was a member of Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church in Dartmouth and was known by the congregation as the “Bake Master.” He was very active in both church and the Town of Dartmouth’s activities and administration. He was on the Board of Directors for the Dartmouth Council on Aging for 13 years and the interim Executive Secretary for the Dartmouth Board of Selectman. He was the past commissioner of Dartmouth Public Works for 7 ½ years. Mr. Mercer also worked on many projects for the Town of Dartmouth including moving town hall. He was highly recognized for his grant work with Dartmouth, including town reimbursements during Hurricane Bob.
He was many things to many people; most importantly, he was a very loving & dedicated husband, father & grandfather. His children, grandchildren & great grandchildren brought him tremendous joy & happiness. He will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors along with his wife include his 6 children: Stephen Mercer and his wife Run Phet of Thailand, Elizabeth Mercer and her husband Paul Izyk of Westport, Patricia Best of Dartmouth, James Mercer of CA, Margaret Hamer and her companion Cecil Smith, III of Dartmouth and John Mercer and his wife Marjorie of Bourne; 2 brothers: Raymond Mercer of FL and Bill Mercer of Newport, RI; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 5 step-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Alan B. Mercer, Jr. and brother of the late Richard and Beatrice Mercer.
Memorial Service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, January 2, 2016 at Smith Mills Christian Congregational Church, Dartmouth at 2:00 P.M.
