Obituary

Freeman H. Buteau of Provincetown died Wednesday, December 16th at Seashore Point Wellness Center in Provincetown. He was 98.

Born and educated in Norwich Conn., he was the son of the late Joseph and Hilda (Freeman) Buteau. A graduate of Norwich Free Academy, he was named an All Star Second Baseman during his time there.

Mr. Buteau was a US Army war veteran. During WW II he served with General George Pattern in the US Third Army and was part of the occupation forces headquartered in Heidelberg Germany. He also served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After 20 years of active service, he retired, lived in Branford, CT. and became the administrator for an Army Reserve transportation unit stationed in New Haven Conn. for an additional 20 years.

After retirement, Freeman continued to enjoy sports. He was a life-long New York Yankee’s fan and followed the UConn Women’s Basketball team with a passion. He also enjoyed salt water fishing and played local tennis up to the age of 85. In 2011, he moved to Provincetown to be near his family.

He is survived by his son Joseph and daughter-in-law, Shari Buteau of North Truro, two granddaughters, Kirsten and her husband Jeb Santos of Situate, Erika and Steve Reale of Chelmsford, as well as 2 great granddaughters Lillian and Lyla. His wife of 42 years, Genevieve (Smola) Buteau predeceased him in 1988.

At Mr. Buteau’s request, there will be no service.

Burial, with military honors will be at the Connecticut State Veteran’s Cemetery, Middletown in the spring.
