Obituary

Joao Marcelino Castro, 83, of Dartmouth died Sunday, December 13, 2015, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Rosemary J. (Gomes) Castro.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Marcelino Ambrosio Castro and Maria T. (Baptista) Castro, he lived in the New Bedford area for many years.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church.
Mr. Castro was formerly employed as a merchant seaman for the Exxon Corporation, having sailed the world for 45 years until his retirement. He was later employed at BJ's Wholesale Club, where he was an outstanding employee. He enjoyed his retirement with his family and extended family friends.
Joao had a good sense of humor, and dabbled in the stock market. He would often share stories of his world travels with all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; a son, John Castro and daughter-in-law Eri of Maryland; a daughter, Jade Castro of New Bedford; a stepdaughter, Kerrie Gomes of New Bedford; and two granddaughters, Autumn Souto and Jaelynn Castro. He also leaves two brothers, Jose Castro and Artur Castro; several nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Rosa Castro Lopes and Ambrosio Castro, his nephews, Marcelino J. "Charlie" Gomes, Carlos Castro, and Marcelino Castro, and his great-nephew, Charles M. Gomes.
His Funeral will be held on Friday at 8 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady Assumption Church at 9 AM.
