Patricia M. McCarthy, 91, formerly of Andover and Exeter, NH, died peacefully on Saturday, December 12, 2015.
Born in Newfoundland as the daughter of Mary Shea Greene and Augustine Greene, Patricia grew up at the Point Verde Lighthouse, where her father was the lighthouse keeper.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Donald Travis of Plymouth; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Bill Waight of Westminster; her grandchildren, Hannah Waight of Princeton, New Jersey, and Brendan and Kelly Waight of Medfield; her great-grandchildren Matthew and Riley Fortin of Acushnet, and her brother-in-law Thomas McCarthy of Methuen. Patricia was pre-deceased by her husband Cornelius McCarthy, her son Cornelius, her granddaughter Rebecca Fortin, her son-in-law Philip Reed, her sisters Marie and Winnie, and her brothers Austin and Ted. She also leaves behind her many nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Point Verde High School in 1941, Pat was employed on the army base in Argentia, Newfoundland, where she met the American army officer with whom she would spend the next 63 years of her life. Resettling in Andover upon her husband’s retirement from the military, Pat worked for a number of years as a realtor and as an Internal Revenue Service tax examiner.
Patricia was a woman of many talents and varied and ongoing interests. There was never enough time for it all: gardening, sewing, cooking, home décor, financial investment, and travel, among other interests. Above all, she loved being with her family.
Patricia was a member of St. Michael’s Church in Exeter, a past member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Hampton, NH, and a longtime parishioner of St. Augustine’s Church in Andover.
Arrangements: Patricia’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 10 a. m. at the John Breen Funeral Home, 122 Amesbury Street, Lawrence. Burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence. Memorial gifts may be sent in Patricia’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
