Doris Tufts, Heinold, U.S. National Figure Skating Judge, 91, of Wellesley Hills, died Thursday at Newton Wellesley Hospital. She was born in Cambridge of the late Nathaniel Perry Tufts and Florence Batchelder Tufts, attended Wellesley High School and was a graduate in 1945 of Garland Junior College in Boston.
Mrs. Heinold entered competitive figure skating at an early age. She won a silver medal at the 1941 Eastern Sectional Figure Skating Championships, Junior Ladies Section and her last amateur competition was at the 1942 United States Figure Skating Championships in Chicago, IL. In 1944 she began her career as a figure skating judge and became a US National Figure Skating Judge in 1963. During her career she judged 29 Regionals, 18 Sectionals, one US National Championship (1989), one US Olympic Festival and one Adult National Championship.
She has been a member of the United States Figure Skating Association (UFFSA) since the late 30’s, a member of the Skating Club of Boston since 1961and a member of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church since her childhood.
Former wife of the late Louis O. Heinold, Jr. and long time companion of the late William White, she is survived by four of her five sons: Benjamin G. Barton, Norwalk, CT.; the late Louis O. Heinold, III; Donald T. Heinold, Barrington, RI; N. Peter Heinold, East Wakefield, NH and Alan S. Heinold, Westford.
Visiting hours will be on Friday, December 18 from 3pm to 7pm at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) Wellesley and the funeral will be held on Saturday, December 19 at 10am at the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, 207 Washington St., (Rt.16) Wellesley, reception following. Relatives and friends kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in the name of Doris Tufts Heinold, to the United States Figure Skating Association - Memorial Fund.
