DAVID W. STURGIS, age 72, a lifelong resident of Hingham, died on Monday, Dec. 27th, 2004 at the Colonial Nursing Center in Weymouth. Mr. Sturgis was born in Stamford, CT and was raised and educated in Hingham, graduating from Hingham High School. He then graduated from Northeastern University in Boston with a B.S. Degree in Education. Mr. Sturgis served from 1950 to 1954 as a Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service he attended Wentworth Institute and later taught Industrial Arts at both Wentworth and in the Hingham Public Schools, retiring in 1978. In addition to his teaching, he was a self-employed carpenter in the Hingham area. Mr. Sturgis was an organizer and manager of the Hingham Farmers' Market. He also was a Scoutmaster with Troop # 103 in Hingham, a Past President of the Hingham Teachers' Association and was active in the civic affairs of the community.
His most recent project was to establish a Memorial for the two bulldogs that were the mascots at the Hingham Ammunition Depot during the World War II years. As a teenager he gave his own bulldog, "Butch", to the depot to serve as one of the mascots.
He leaves his wife Mary E. (Lordan) Sturgis of Hingham and was the father of Donna M. Lentz of Weymouth, Nancy A. Craveiro of Danvers, Christopher T. Sturgis, Suzanne M. Sturgis and David L. Sturgis all of Hingham. He is also survived by his sister, Jane M. Hearn of Ballston Spa, NY, 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
A Graveside Service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 15th at 11:30 AM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
