Obituary

Laconia, NH-----Clifton Burrows Newell, 89, died Saturday, November 28, 2015. He was born September 29, 1926 at the Laconia Hospital, son of Clarence Saxon Newell and Bernice (Burrows) Newell. He graduated from the Laconia High School, class of 1944.

Clifton joined the Unites States Navy in September 1944 and served in the South Pacific on the USS Tucson. He was in Tokyo Bay when surrender papers were signed April of 1945. He was discharged as Signalman Third Class, June 14, 1946.

Clifton then studied at the Oxford School of Business Administration in Cambridge, MA, and graduated with a with a major in Banking and Finance in 1950. He worked for The First National Bank of Boston for the next five years. Clifton then became a National Bank Examiner for the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of the Comptroller of Currency for 10 years. In 1965 he became Comptroller of the Mechanics National Bank of Concord. Four years later, the Mechanics National Bank of Concord, The Manchester National Bank, and the Second National Bank of Nashua all merged to form the Bank of New Hampshire, NA. Clifton was appointed Vice President and Controller for the Bank of New Hampshire , where he remained until his retirement on December 21, 1990.

Clifton was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 75 years, serving as Financial Secretary for several years. He enjoyed sports, and was an avid golfer as a member of the Laconia Country Club since 1953 and member of the Senior Bowling Club for over 20 years.

In 1962, Clifton married Arlene Croteau and they enjoyed a 49 year marriage until her passing in 2011.

Clifton is survived by his sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Page of Chelmsford, MA, 8 nephews and nieces, 16 grandnephews and grandnieces, and 20 great grandnephews and grandnieces.

His sister, Lucille Rollins, predeceased Clifton.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Laconia/Gilford on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at 10 am.

There will be no calling hours.
