Melvin Lawrence Smith

Melvin Lawrence Smith, 84, of Anderson, passed peacefully in his sleep on November 27, 2015 at Bethany Pointe Health Campus after an extended illness.
He was born in Hermondale, MO on September 8, 1931. Melvin spent the majority of his life in Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Rosie Smith of Hayti, MO; brothers, William (Versie) Hill of New Orleans, LA; Leslie B. Smith of Hayti, MO; Spencer Smith of Hayti, MO and sister, Lillie B. Leaks of Blytheville, AR.
He attended school in Hayti, MO and later served his country in the United States Army as a medic in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.
Melvin worked at Delco Remy for more than 37 years in various capacities until his retirement in 1986.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing and riding motorcycles. He was a lifetime member of the NAACP.
Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Mary R. Smith of Anderson and from this union one son, Melvin L. (Jennifer) Smith, Jr. of Twinsburg, OH; one daughter by a previous marriage, Glenda (Kevin) Carmichael of Brooklyn, NY; a son, Anthony Hawkins of Marion, IN; special daughter, Lisa (Perry) Hines of Carmel, IN; sisters-in-law, Doris Johnson of Flossmoor, IL and Rosemary Rudy of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Ryan and Evan Smith; Clifton, Charlie and Tyler Carmichael; Harrison and Bradford Hines; other grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Melvin was loved by all and will be missed!
Services will be 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 3 at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Rev. Dana Hill officiating. Entombment will follow at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum of Eternal Life. Military graveside rites will be performed by VFW Post 266 Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Thursday.
