RITA (SCANLAN) FERRIS, age 87, a Hingham resident for 63 years, died on Friday, June 3rd at the Norwell Knoll Nursing Home in Norwell after a brief illness. Mrs. Ferris was born, raised and educated in Dorchester. She worked at various times for Sears & Roebuck in Boston, Baker's 5 & 10 Cent Store in Hingham and Hennessey's News, also in Hingham. She was an active leader of the Hingham Girl Scouts, the Hingham Brownies, and volunteered at the polls during town elections. She also was a member of the Hingham High School Intergenerational Group. Mrs. Ferris was interested in the affairs of senior citizens at the Hingham Senior Center, and was a past officer of the Braintree Stroke Club and the Hingham Stroke Club. She was well known in Hingham for her many interests and talents, including rug hooking, rug braiding,neddle point and crocheting.
Wife of the late Oliver L. Ferris, she leaves 7 daughters; Margaret "Meg" Kenagy of Portland, OR, Ann M. Murphy of Burlington, MA, Judith V. Fitzgerald of So. Weymouth, Susan C. Walsh of Quincy, Mary F. Gens of Westwood, Ellen F. Henry of Hanson and Amy E. Mathews of Portland, OR. Cousin of Mazie Manley of Quincy. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 7th at 10 AM at St. Paul's Church, 147 North St., Hingham Square.
Friends may visit at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Monday from 3-8 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Hingham Girl Scouts, c/o Geri Duff, Treasurer, 37 Bradley Park Dr., Hingham, MA 02043 or to the Braintree Physical Therapy Clinic, 250 Pond St, Braintree, MA 02184.
The interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Hingham.
