Obituary

West Boylston--Lucy Losapio died peacefully on May 31, 2005 after a very brief stay at UMass Memorial Hospital. The beloved daughter of Mauro and Jenny (Avellino) Losapio (both deceased), she was born on October 20, 1923, in Worcester. She is survived by two sisters, Anna Granquist, wife of Paul of Holden, MA, Esther Fortner, widow of Robert, of Orlando, FL, and a brother, Thomas F. Losapio of Orlando, Fl and wife Ruth and many much-loved nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Although afflicted with cerebral palsy, Lucy attended Adams Street Elementary School. She endured numerous surgeries and treatments during her formative years including experimental procedures at the Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children, SanFancisco, CA. enabling her to eventually be gainfully employed by the former Worcester City Hospital’s Laundry Dept. There she suffered an industrial accident requiring amputation of her arm, causing further disability and loss of independent living. While a Worcester resident, Lucy was a member of Christ Baptist Church where she participated in the choir and dorcas society. Leaving with family in 1975 to reside in Orlando, FL,
Lucy quickly was involved in senior programs at Dover Shores, Pine Castle Baptist Church (she was also a member) and St. Mary Magdalene, enjoying arts, crafts and group travel programs. Lucy was awarded numerous prizes for making the “Most Creative Easter Bonnet” which included appearances on local television.

In 1997, Lucy became a resident at Oakdale Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center, West Boylston, MA. She was a very involved participant in the activities program including painting, concert and baseball game outings, picnics, dancing and more. Listening to music and participating in sing-a-longs and winning at bingo gave her great pleasure. Lucy also participated in the Seven Hills Foundation Day Hab program (Worcester), where she spent many pleasurable hours. At both facilities, Lucy’s caretakers, van drivers, nurses and staff were very dear to her.

Giving her the most enjoyment was being with her family at holiday gatherings, going to picnics, the beach, cookouts and card playing. Even with all her afflictions, Lucy radiated cheerfulness and a positive attitude with a broad smile and a twinkle in her eye.

Arrangements are incomplete for a Memorial Service to be held in August. Please omit flowers.
