Obituary

James Leonard Spires, Jr., 84, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at his residence.

Graveside services will be held 2 PM, Friday, November 13, 2015, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald with the Rev. Earlie Holt and the Rev. David Fisher officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Mr. Spires was born September 26, 1931, in Berrien County, Georgia, to the late James Leonard and Ruth King Spires. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was owner/operator of Central Oil Service Station, along with his brother-in-law, Johnny Beck for 27 years. Mr. Spires enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a devoted husband and a loving daddy and granddaddy. He attended the Fitzgerald Church of God.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years: Sonia Tomberlin Spires of Fitzgerald; a daughter and son-in-law: Melinda Kay Hughes & Robby of Ft. Valley; a grandson: Hunter Hughes; brother-in-law: Johnny Beck & Frances of Fitzgerald. Several nieces also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Reuben Spires and a sister: Naomi Spires Beck.
