Obituary

Raymond F. Barlow, 84, of New Bedford passed away Thursday November 5, 2015 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Ann E. (Markey) Peternel Barlow.

Born in Livingston, NJ, the son of the late Freeman E. and Alice M. (Wardick) Barlow, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.

Mr. Barlow was formerly employed as a police officer for the New Bedford Police Department for 31 years until his retirement in 1988.

During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the Whaling City Post 3196 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Mass. Police Association. He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 73.

He is survived by his wife Ann; his stepdaughters, Lisa Leonard of Oak Bluffs, Rosemary Leary of South Carolina, and Elizabeth Bottomley of Florida; his sister, Diane Machado of Acushnet; eleven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Barlow, his stepson, Robert Peternel, and his siblings, Shirley Barlow, Gladys Macey, and Robert Barlow.

His Funeral will be held on Monday at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11 AM.
