Lubow (Luba) Maryniuk (nee Karvanska) died peacefully in her home in Brookline, MA on October 30 at the age of 91 with family by her side. Luba was born on January 18, 1924 in the village of Chornoholova, in the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine. While studying and working in Munich, she met her husband, Andrew (Andrij) and they were married in Germany in 1949. After immigrating to the USA (Detroit, Michigan) in 1951, they raised their two sons, George (Yurko) who is a dentist in Brookline, MA (wife, Melinda Maryniuk) and Jerry (Yarko) a physician in Ventura, CA (wife, Diane Bertoy). While in Detroit, Luba was very involved providing years of leadership to Ridna Shkola (Ukrainian Saturday School) and was a beloved teacher. She also participated in Soyuz Ukrainok (Women’s League of America). Through the years in Detroit and Miami, she remained very active in the Ukrainian Catholic Church and in Plast (Ukrainian) scouting activities. In 1980, she and Andrew retired to Miami Beach where they resided until Andrew’s death in 2011. Luba’s family brought her great joy, especially her grandsons, Andrew Laurence Maryniuk and Adam Downie Maryniuk. The boys spent many joyful summers at the Ukrainian summer community in Kerhonkson, NY where Luba read with them in Ukrainian, and fed them enormous home-cooked meals. Luba was thrilled to attend Adam’s wedding to Jessica Wood in August and is equally thrilled about Andrew’s upcoming wedding to Katrina Ciraldo. Melinda and Diane (the wives of George and Jerry) brought joy by becoming the daughters she never had and by providing her tremendous help during her elder years. Luba moved to Brookline in 2012 and enjoyed her final years residing at the Goddard House. Her family was awed by her love of life and her ability to overcome adversity. As she became less able to be active physically, her artistic side reawakened and she loved making jewelry, painting, attending concerts, playing computer games, keeping up with Ukrainian news and even Facebook!
