Joseph E. “Red” Hamilton
...WWII Army Veteran of India Burma Campaign; 81
TEWKSBURY - Joseph E. “Red” Hamilton, age 81, a resident of Tewksbury for five decades,
died Monday morning, May 30, at Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell, after a brief period
of declining health. He was the husband of Hedwige T. (Brennick) Hamilton, with whom he
would have celebrated a 54th wedding anniversary on Thursday.
He was born in Cambridge, on February 8, 1924, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (McGovern)
Hamilton. He was raised in Cambridge, but had lived in Tewksbury since 1956.
During WWII, he served in the India-Burma Campaign.
He worked as a driver for the Penn Oil Company and Sellar’s Oil Company.
Mr. Hamilton was a communicant of St. William’s Church, a former member of the St. William’s
Men’s Club, and a former member of the Fr. Coppen’s Council, Knights of Columbus, Council
4336 in Tewksbury.
More recently, he was a member of the Tewksbury Golden Age Club, and in earlier years, was a
Tewksbury Youth Baseball Coach.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara M. Cavanaugh and her
husband Robert of Tewksbury; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Lois Hamilton of FL.
He was also brother-in-law of the late William Brennick, and Mary Salerno.
His Funeral
Mass was held Thursday, June 2, in St. William’s Church. Interment was in St. Mary’s
Cemetery, No. Tewksbury. Memorials to Oblate Father’s Infirmary Fund, P.O.
Box 419, Tewksbury, MA 01876 will be appreciated.
