CHICOPEE – Alfred J. “Fred” Monaco, 81, a lifelong resident of the Willimansett Heights section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, October 21, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born at home on Ashmont Street in Willimansett Heights on May 19, 1934, a beloved son of the late Giuseppe and Maria Domenica (DeGrandis) Monaco. He later built a new home adjacent to the home he was born in where he lived the remainder of his life. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and attained the rank of Airman First Class. Following his military service, he was employed for over 25 years as a machinist at the former American Bosch, which later became United Technologies, in Springfield. Upon the closing of the company, he was employed as a maintenance mechanic for Old Colony Envelope in Westfield. He was a longtime communicant of the former Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Willimansett and currently was a communicant of Saint Anthony of Padua Church in Willimansett. Fred was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a longtime member of the Chicopee Sportsmen’s Club. He was also a member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus in Chicopee and a member of the Willimansett Heights Improvement League. Fred enjoyed spending time with his family and truly enjoyed the upcoming holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas. He enjoyed cooking and everyone always waited anxiously for his wonderful Christmas cookies. Most of all, he was a quiet man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Ann E. (Hopkins) Monaco who was Called Home on April 4, 2015. They were married on June 27, 1964 at the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel in Springfield and were blessed with over 50 years of happiness together. Besides his parents and his wife, he was also predeceased by his two loving brothers, Rocco Monaco who was Called Home on May 3, 2007 and Carmine Monaco who was Called Home on December 22, 2011. He leaves his two loving daughters, Domenica Mary Jesus and her husband, Mario, of South Deerfield and Carla Ann Weibel and her partner, Keith Formanek, of West Suffield, CT; his six cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Kianna Maria Domenica Jesus, Mario Alpiarca Jesus, Monique Monaco Irene Jesus, Devon Anthony Jesus, Nicholas Joseph Weibel and Kaitlin Elizabeth Weibel; his cherished step great-granddaughter, Marlie Fuentes; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Monaco and Hopkins families. He will also be sadly missed by his faithful canine companion, his dog, Casper. His funeral will be held on Thursday morning, October 29, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Anthony of Padua Church, 56 Saint Anthony Street, Chicopee, MA 01013. His Committal Service with United States Air Force Military Honors and the Committal Service for his beloved wife, Ann Monaco, will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
