On October 13, 2015 Milton Eugene Spurrier. Born and raised in Mount Airy Maryland, Mr. Spurrier attended The Maryland School for the Blind, and was the first blind student to obtain a degree from Towson State College. He later earned a Master’s degree in education at The University of Maryland. Mr. Spurrier spent his entire professional life helping other blind people learn to lead independent, productive lives. He was Supervisor of Services for the Blind for the Maryland Department of Vocational Rehabilitation from 1971 to his retirement in 1989, after which he continued to be active in advocacy for the visually impaired. In 1967 he was the recipient of the Elkins Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor of the Year award. In 1974, Towson State College recognized him with the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service. In 2013, the Central Maryland Council of the Blind, created the M.Eugene Spurrier Distinguished Service Award, of which he was the first recipient. His life accomplishments in spite of a serious disability were an inspiration to all who knew him. He was the beloved husband of 58 years to the late Carole A. Spurrier (NEE Dentz) and devoted father of Michael Spurrier, Ellen Coyle, Lizbeth Ball, Barbara Fiedler, and Laura Warner. Loving grandfather of 11 and great grandfather of one. Dear brother of Winifred Gist and husband Rodney and Betty Shock and husband William and brother in law of Paula Parsons and husband John, Linda Schnuit and husband Martin. His son-in-laws, daughter-in-laws and many nieces and nephews share in the family sorrow.
Family and friends may call at The Johnson-Fosbrink Funeral Home P.A., 8521 Loch Raven Blvd. (beltway exit 29B) on Sunday, October 18th from 2 to 5p.m. All are invited to attend a Funeral Mass in The Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Monday, October 19th at 9a.m. Interment private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Friends of the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 672 Old Mill Road, #128, Millersville, MD 21108.
