Obituary

Philip F. Cerveny, Jr, DDS, 80, died on October 11, 2015 at Lakes Region General Hospital after a period of declining health. Born in Goodland, Kansas in 1935 to Philip and Gertrude Cerveny, he started his career in dentistry in Maplewood, NJ after serving for four years in Germany for the US Army Dental Corps. He moved to Gilford in 1967 and practiced in Laconia for 30 years prior to his retirement from his One Mill Plaza office. Phil was a member of the Lakes Region Dental Society, the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry and various dental study groups.

After growing up and attending school in Oakmont, PA, he graduated from Bucknell University in 1957 and the University of Pennsylvania Dental School in 1961. Married to Gwen for 58 years, their family includes Philip (Kip) F. Cerveny, III, his wife, Beverly, and their children, Matthew, Dylan and Anna in Anchorage, AK; Lee Cerveny and her children, Nicholas and Alexander in Seattle, WA; Ned Cerveny and Donna Russo in Bow; and Gregg Cerveny and Amy Mitson in Lebanon. Phil is also survived by his brother, Robert Cerveny and his wife, Janice of Port St. Lucie, FL and their children, Shannon, Karen and Robert Jr., and his sister, Susan Johnston and her husband Skip, of Sugartree, TN and their children Jennifer and J-Rae and their families.

Phil was an avid golfer, hiker and skier. A long-time member of the Laconia Country Club, where he was a past president and member of the club's board. He volunteered for several years as hike-master for the Gilford Outing Club. Phil was also a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club's New England Four Thousand Footers, a 13-year Gilford Youth Baseball coach, and served on the Gilford Middle-High School Board, including the Building Committee in 1971-73 which planned construction of the new school. Phil was also very active in the Gunstock Nordic Association, and served as an official at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics.

There will be a private celebration of his life at a later date. Assisting the family at this time, is Wilkinson-Beane Simoneau-Paquette Funeral Home.
