Violet M. (Matta) Mather age 98 of Avon, died Monday October 5, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the devoted wife for 71 years of the late Fred “Fliver” Mather, Sr. Violet was born in Onset and raised in the South End of Boston a daughter of the late Charles and Mary Matta and had been a resident of Avon for the past 45 years. Previously she lived in Brockton for many years.
Violet had been a stitcher for many years at the George Pratt Shoe Company. She and her husband were also owners of the Mather’s Mobil on the eastside of Brockton. Violet had been a longtime communicant of St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church where she was past president of the St. Theresa Women’s Altar Society and past president of the Lebanese American National Club Auxiliary.
Violet enjoyed playing cards, cooking, sewing and knitting. She will be remembered as a loving, kind and compassionate lady whose true joy in life was her family, especially spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. Violet loved spending her summers in Onset with her family.
Violet was the devoted mother of Mary Ann Donohue of W. Bridgewater, Fred T. Mather, Jr. of Halifax, Linda Caffrey of W. Bridgwater, Gail Mather of Avon, Michael C. Mather, Sr. and Thomas Mather both of Brockton and the late Sandra Mather. She also leaves 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. She was the sister of Josephine Baker of Quincy and the late Victoria, Joseph and Louis Matta and the aunt to many.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (rte.123) Brockton on Thursday 3-7pm. The procession will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 9:30am for a Service of the Divine Liturgy at 10:30am in St. Theresa Maronite Church 343 N. Main St., Brockton.
