Obituary

CHICOPEE – Roger Cantin, 85, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Monday, September 28, 2015. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Berlin, New Hampshire on August 6, 1930, a beloved son of the late Alfred and Antoinette (Levasseur) Cantin. At a young age in 1943, his family moved from Berlin, New Hampshire to Chicopee. He later lived in the Aldenville section of Chicopee before moving to Fairview in 1975. He graduated from Chicopee High School and later from Western New England College in Springfield. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Business. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War and attained the rank of Radarman Second Class. He served with the 6th Fleet aboard the USS Dyess and the USS Gyatt and received the Navy Occupation Service Medal. Following his military service, Roger attended the Springfield Armory Tool Design Apprentice School and graduated as a Toolmaker. He then became the Assistant Superintendant at the former Tampax Corporation in the Three Rivers Village of Palmer. He then accepted a position at the former Belchertown State School as the Director of Maintenance and later was the Director of Operations at Western Mass Hospital in Westfield. In 1999 as a resident engineer, he oversaw construction projects for DCAM at DYS in Westfield, Springfield District Court and the Springfield Housing Court. He later worked for Native Energy at Barnes Air Force Base in Westfield where he ended his long work career at the age of 80. In addition, he was also the owner and operator of the New England Manufacturing Company. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. He was a member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus and the Fairview American Legion Post 438, both in Chicopee. He was an Institutional Representative for many years for Boy Scout Troop 138 and a longtime basketball and soccer coach for the AJAC, both in Aldenville. Above all, he was a loving husband, father and grandfather who showered his family with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his beloved son, Roger A. Cantin who was Called Home in 1954; his beloved daughter, Claire M. (Cantin) Peters who was Called Home on October 30, 1988; and his beloved son-in-law, James Peters. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Alice Y. (Daviau) Cantin. They were married on November 21, 1953 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee and were blessed with nearly 62 years of happiness together. He also leaves his four loving children, Paul A. Cantin and his wife, Michele, and Robert G. Cantin and his wife, Dawn, all of Chicopee, Bella M. Turkowski and her husband, Thomas, of Enfield, CT, and Thomas G. Cantin and his wife, Ann Marie, of Chicopee; his seven cherished grandchildren, Xiomara Claire-Blanche Cantin and her fiancé, Frankie Gonzalez, Matthew R. Cantin and his wife, Anna, Michael R. Cantin and his partner, Stefanie Blair, Benjamin A. Prouser, Joshua D. Prouser, William N. Cantin and Alicia C. Cantin; his dear sister-in-law, Doris Asselin and her husband, George, of Pinellas Park, FL; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Cantin and Daviau families. His funeral will be held on Saturday morning, October 3, 2015 at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806) 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 (the funeral home will open at 8 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
