John V. Barnes, Sr., 68 of New Bedford died Thursday September 24, 2015 suddenly at St. Luke's Hospital.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Chester W. and Lillian F. (Frola) Barnes, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Barnes was formerly employed as a machine operator for Borg-Warner for many years and later worked as a custodian for the New Bedford School Department.
An avid golfer, he enjoyed playing golf at the Whaling City Golf Course and Hawthorne Country Club. He was a member of the Centro Luso Club and the Sixth Bristol Club.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Diana R. Borges; two children, Joann Barnes-Lague and her husband Richard Lague of Lakeville, and John V. Barnes, Jr. and his companion Janice LaFlamme of New Bedford; a brother, James P. Barnes of New Bedford; his former wife, Barbara Barnes of Lakeville; and two grandsons, Cody and Cameron.
He was the brother of the late Thomas A. Barnes.
