Obituary

Bartholomew Burns, age 90, of Plymouth, died Saturday, September 19, at the Newfield House in Plymouth. He was the devoted husband of Louise (Costello) Burns for 65 years, and the loving father of Virginia Walkins and her husband David of N. Attleboro, Marcia Penney and her late husband Jerry of Plymouth, Daniel Burns and his wife Marianne of Falmouth, Michael Burns and his wife Dr. Stephanie Devaney of St. Paul, MN, and Marion Murray and her husband Larry of Tacoma, WA. Bart was also the brother of Sister Mary Burns, SND, Nora Howley, Dorothy Marchese, Helen Markham, Veronica Smith, and Daniel Burns (all deceased), as well as the grandfather of 13 and the great grandfather of 5. Born in Boston, MA, on January 25, 1925, son of the late Daniel and Mary T. (O'Neil) Burns, Bart graduated from Boston Latin High School in 1943 and went on to serve in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943-1945 as a navigator on a B-17 for 35 missions. He then stayed in England to train new navigators and to fly humanitarian missions. Following his service, he attended two years at Boston College, transferred to Colorado School of Mines and graduated as a mining engineer in 1952. Bart worked extensively in mining in Arizona and in Ecuador before building a water treatment plant in the Panama Canal Zone. He then returned to the United States where he built several sports stadiums including the Buffalo Sabres, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Philadelphia Phillies. Bart was a member of the Elks in Brighton, the Knights of Columbus in Brighton, and the John Alden Sportsman's Club in Manomet. Visitation will be held at the Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road, Plymouth (Manomet), on Wednesday, September 23rd, from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will take place the following day at St. Bonaventure's Church in Manomet at 11:00 am followed by burial in the MA National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:45 pm.
