Mark E. Sullivan, 88, of Westport, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Home and Hospice Care Center of RI in Providence, RI. He was the husband of Mary Lou (Gunnison) Sullivan.
Born in South Bend, IN, son of the late John B. and Elinor V. (Reamer) Sullivan, he had been a longtime resident of Westport. Mr. Sullivan was an altar boy at St. Lawrence Church, New Bedford. He was a 1948 graduate of Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA where he was the recipient of the Bette Davis Award. He later attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. A veteran of WWII, he served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS North Carolina as an EM3. He began his career in insurance claims at Peerless Insurance Co. of Keene, NH, later moving on to Allstate Insurance Co. in NY and eventually retiring from Prudential Insurance Co. of NJ. Mr. Sullivan played semi-pro football for and was a member of the former James P. Murphy Memorial Club of New Bedford. He was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. He was also a big fan of Syracuse University, University of Notre Dame, Army and Navy Football teams.
Survivors along with his wife include his 2 sons: Philip Bradick Sullivan BM2 (SW) and his wife Dietrich LS1(SW, SCW) USN Retired, of Virginia Beach, VA and Mark E. Sullivan, III and his wife Cathy of Attleboro, MA and his daughter: Anne Marie Aloi and her husband Joe of Advance, SC; step-son: Guy Evans of Sardinia, NY; 5 grandchildren: Mark C. Sullivan and his wife Teri; Jake Sullivan and his girlfriend Sarah Pinto, Keri Shaffer and her husband Luke, Philip A. Sullivan and Nicholas A. Sullivan; 5 great grandchildren: Shelby Sullivan, Brooke Sullivan, Owen Sullivan, Ryan Shaffer and Mason Shaffer; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late John B. Sullivan.
Services will be private.
