SPRINGFIELD – Suzanne E. (Cardin) Cawley, 89, a longtime resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, September 6, 2015. She passed into Eternal Life at the Palmer Healthcare Center after a long Journey Home with Alzheimer’s surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada on April 3, 1926, a beloved daughter of the late Robert N. and Hortense M. (Gauthier) Cardin. She came to Springfield with her family around 1929 and lived for several years in the Forest Park section of Springfield. After her marriage to Bernie Cawley, they moved to the Hungry Hill section of the Springfield. She graduated from the High School of Commerce in 1943 and was listed in her yearbook as a “prominent member” of the girl’s soccer, basketball and baseball teams as well as a squad leader of the MP Girls Patrol. She was last employed as a Teacher’s Aide for the Springfield Public Schools and retired in 1988. She was a founding member of the Van Horn Parents Association. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family, a “Culinary Wizard” and a wonderful seamstress who showered her family with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was a communicant of Holy Name Church, Our Lady of Hope Church and currently a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, all in Springfield. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Bernard C. “Bernie” Cawley who was Called Home on December 8, 2009. They were married at Holy Name Church in Springfield on February 18, 1950 and were blessed with nearly 60 years of happiness together. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving son, John R. “Jackie” Cawley who was Called Home on April 30, 2004; her two dear sisters and brothers-in-law, Pauline Holt and her husband, C. Robert, and Lucie Lagodich and her husband, Alexander; and her dear brother-in-law of the Cawley family, Raymond Cawley. She leaves her four loving children, David B. Cawley and his wife, Mary, of Holland, Patricia S. Cawley of Springfield, Jeffrey M. Cawley and his wife, Ann, and Mary D. Shea and her husband, John, all of West Springfield; her nine cherished grandchildren, Amber Haddock and her husband, Randy, Summer Haggerty, Adem Clemons, Brendan, Erin and Hannah Cawley and Padraig “Paddy”, Katie and Tim Shea; her two cherished great-grandchildren, Fynn Clemons and Billie Paige; her dear sister-in-law, Barbara “Mitzi” Cawley of East Longmeadow; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Cawley and Cardin families. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning, September 11, 2015 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, September 10, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the Palmer House Family Council for Staff Appreciation, 250 Shearer Street, Palmer, MA 01069 or to the Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
